Fergie stands firm over Heinze exit

Sir Alex Ferguson has firmly reiterated that Gabriel Heinze will not be swapping Manchester United for great rivals Liverpool.

Rafa Benitez confirmed on Monday that the Argentinian international is a transfer target for the Anfield club, and the Spaniard has put the club's lawyers onto the case after seeing an opening offer spurned by United.

Heinze's agent reputedly has a letter which gives the defender permission to leave Old Trafford, even if he still has two years to run on his current contract with the English champions.

However, it is believed that United chief executive David Gill informed the player and his representatives that any move to a rival Premier League club would not be considered.

Ferguson is already negotiating one minefield of a transfer in the shape of Carlos Tevez's potential move from West Ham, but the Scot is still maintaining a hard-line approach over his refusal to let Heinze go to Anfield.

Ferguson has also criticised Heinze's agent for his role in the transfer dispute.

"Gabriel Heinze will not be joining Liverpool," Ferguson stated firmly.

"We are examining some of the statements coming from his agent and when contact was first made with Liverpool.

"We are not happy with the agent's conduct in the matter and we are examining that as well, but it will take a couple of days before we have anything more to say."

Some sources have construed Ferguson's comments as hinting that United are looking into the possibility of an illegal approach by Liverpool.

If The Reds do manage to get their hands on the former Paris Saint Germain defender then he will become the first player to move from Old Trafford to Anfield since Phil Chisnall in 1964.
